Sheep Hunt 2008

Well, like most trips into the wild, they all have their ups and downs. Our ups began on the flight to Kotzebue. It was a 2.5 or more hour flight in N35CL. A nice flight, I got to see a lot of the country North of Nome, and North of Serpentine, which is as far as I had gone before. We got into Kotz late Sunday night. We woke early to get things ready and check the country for sheep. We flew for about 4 hours and did not see many. Some of the downs--- Zeb decided to look the next day at a different location. Those of you familiar with a map of the Kotzebue area may have seen the Delong Mountains. That is where we went. This was a little better, he found a bench 1500 feet up to land on and some sheep near by.


Beautiful Country! Even some sheep! But alas the ups and downs, we did not see a full curl ram, which was what the permit was good for. We stayed out from Tuesday night until Friday night.








If you look really closely you can see a small ewe in one of the pictures. They were so cute to watch!


Steep climbing on the second day. Difficult for us, but the sheep just moved with ease and balance from one rock outcropping to the next. Pretty cool to just sit and watch.










We decided to go fishing the next day on the Wulik River. They get large Arctic Char up there. Char are related to Dolly Varden and Salmon too. They just don't die after they spawn. They keep growing, Zeb got a nice one!
