Today my class was one of the privileged few to see the Rock Creek Mine! We are studying gold as part of a National Science Foundation project. Eventually we will be making videos and working with Google Earth to make media presentations about mining. This was the first step. Perhaps the most exciting part was being outfitted with hard hats and reflective vests the minute we arrived.
We were in the bus for most of the tour and students got to get out at different points to see areas of the mine. This is the crusher! They marked each place on a GPS and took a photo of it.
At one point we were even in the pit. Eventually it will be dug 700 ft. down, for now it was only about 40 feet deep. Did you know that they find 1 gram of gold per 1 Ton of Rock? That is a lot of rock at Rock Creek! It was nice to see what is happening so close to town. Not many people get to visit the mine and I was excited that my students got to share in this unique experience.

Andy says you jinxed the mine and now it shut down. Turns out Rock Creek is up a financial creek! Good thing you toured when you did.
